When things go wrong, don’t go with them. – Elvis Presley
The world, as we knew it, is shattering. Hundreds of millions of people have been stymied by questions of WHY? Why did this happen; why can’t authorities deal with it; why is it happening to my life??? And that, as Shakespeare said, is the rub. Our lives are being rubbed out by unanswered Whys. There are no answers now, only the task at hand. That task is survival – getting through to the other side.. Try to drop as many whys as possible while you deal with your day-to-day tasks.
Find comfort in the commonplace things we do. Set aside the monumental, and be in the little moments. These little moments are the fabric of our lives. The other day, I luxuriated in an extra long face washing. There was something profound about the warm water splashing over my face, the soft cloth across my eyes, the freshness of my skin as the water evaporated. I find I am brushing my teeth longer – maybe it is a coping mechanism to delay dealing with the day fully. But what I feel most is gratitude. Although many of my family, my friends, you my cousins around the world, are forced to deal with calamitous news, we should understand – we are not alone in this fight. There are multitudes by our sides.
The past has been shattered. The present has been hobbled. Nearly every plan has been changed. Normalcy is precious. Find courage in your perseverance. Strike a balance between worry and hope. Do not swing too far one way or another. As LaoZi said in the Tao de Jing (Tao te Ching) “Simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being. Patient with both friends and enemies, you accord with the way things are. Compassionate toward yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world.” When facing this darkness, bring peace to your heart and let the positive light shine, as often as you can.
The sun does continue to rise and set. With the passing of each dawn and dusk, humanity approaches the apex, and one unknown day we all will flow down-slope towards resolution. Why we are here, why we suffer, why…? Those questions that need answered will be answered one day. The unanswered whys should be left frozen in the past. Be Safe. Stay Healthy. Peace.
