Build a New Model

You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.
Buckminster Fuller

The time for change is Right NOW. Change has come to the planet in the form of a death threat from a microscopic creature. About half the planet is now under some sort of stay at home order. So much of normal day-to-day life has been suspended that the planet Earth is moving less. According to CNN, the lack of traffic from trains, cars, buses etc. has caused the earth’s crust to vibrate less. The planet has grown quiet. There is a 30 -50% reduction in ambient seismic noise, as humanity hits pause.

Domestic life is now the focus of most people’s lives. Some can work from home and some cannot. But nearly four billion people have now restricted their public movements to only what is necessary. Retreating behind locked doors, cities have grown quiet. The absence of people on the streets has emboldened wild animals to come roam around. The Guardian had a good article on this phenomena. Animals have the city to themselves. Yahoo News had a good article also.

The storm still rages around the world. The pandemic is very real, and getting more terrifying region by region. But these strange days show the normal model for managing society is obsolete. Too many governments have failed to be prepared; too many thousands will die because too many antiquated systems favor the elite. The unfairness of current economic models has never been more obvious. But there are few ways to shape the system, and so new ways must be found to increase decency and justice.

The storm will pass, but how many will not be here to see the sunshine? How many millions of people’s lives will lie in ruins. There must be a better way. During this time strengthen your resolve to improve your life. This does not have to be economic in nature, but instead refocus on what is important to you and those around you. Weather the storm, but like a seed seeking the sunlight, burst through the dust and debris of what was. Burst into bloom in the world that will come. Have faith in yourself and in humanity. I’ll end by quoting Shakespeare, How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in it. Stay healthy. Peace.
